Mark Engel is known for his colorful and expressive paintings. His work centers around the human figure and varies between portraiture and figure painting. Mark grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area and received his MFA from San Jose State University. His work has been shown in numerous museums and galleries across the US and is in many public and private collections.

My paintings are an exploration of the multifaceted landscapes of the human experience and an expression of the transformative powers of the self. I use the figure as a central motif combined with a tapestry of realistic references, gestural abstraction, patterning, landscape, floral, and art history. This amalgamation is an exploration of the self’s transformation, where identity is constructed and deconstructed over time and mirrors the complex dialogue between the conscious and the unconscious mind.
